The Balm Haul | First Impressions

I've recently branched out into international waters and added a new beauty brand to my collection - The Balm.
Mary-Lou Maniser has been on my makeup wishlist since I first started blogging and I finally whipped my bank card out and bought it - along with another product that just called my name...

Seriously how gorgeous are these products?

Mary-Lou Maniser has not been off my face since I bought it, it is the most highlighting powder I have ever used. Its a pale yellow toned champagne colour, slightly too dark for my pale complexion - however if applied with a fan brush and a light hand it blends into my skin seamlessly. This also looks amazing as an inner corner highlight to brighten up dark eyes.

I was suprised at the price of this product, some products are around the same price as MAC Cosmetics. I bought my Mary-Lou Maniser from Feel Unique for  £14 - original price £17.50 - I managed to bag mine during a flash sale.

The next thing I bought was the Nude'tude palette which is the most gorgeous everyday palette known to man - it also has some plum and burgandy colours which I love! If your subscribed to my YouTube channel you'll see a red toned colour used in pretty much every tutorial - I'm obsessed!

This palette just spoke my language it has all the colours you could ever need for a day time glam look, or a night time blown out smokey eye. It has twelve shades, four matte the rest shimmer and frost finish. I haven't had chance to fully test this palette out, but I will be filming a tutorial using this palette very soon. I picked this up for £24 - original price £30.

If you're not a online shopper, fear not Urban Outfitters are official stockists so you can swatch to your hearts content.

What are your thoughts on The Balm?

MAC Hip 'N' Happy Lip Pencil

It's only recently that I've really gotten into lip pencils, they were regrettably a makeup step I skipped - silly me. Deep, dark, bright and vibrant lip colours really exaggerated my uneven lip shape so lip pencils have really become my best friend. I do not overdraw my lips at all I stick to my lip shape but I find they look a lot more even when traced with a lip pencil prior to applying lipstick.

As like many self confessed beauty hoarder I have a ton of lip products, so I need more universal lip pencils which suit a variety of my lipsticks - this is where MAC Cosmetics Hip 'N' Happy comes in.

This colour suits a lot of my neutral mid tone pinks, by this I mean half way between a nude and a fuchsia shade. This colour looks gorgeous when applied and providing my lips are nicely balmed before hand it boosts the staying power of the product applied over the top. However I have one issue with this lip pencil, it's a bloody faff to apply! I have another MAC Cosmetics lip pencil which is a Pro Longwear Pencil and it applys smoothly, however the standard pencils seem drier in formula and can drag when being applied. I usually tackle this by either giving it a quick blast under the hair drier or I use some of the lip balm on my lips to get it going.

All in all this lip pencil is a gorgeous shade and if you love mid toned neutral pinks this will be your versatile best friend.

Have you tried the MAC Cosmetics Lip Pencils - what was your verdict on the formula?

Porcelain Queen Archives | Illamasqua Precision Gel Liner | #5

Today I'm back with another post from my Archives series, I love writing these posts as I enjoy reading the original review and seeing if I still feel the same way about the product now, I also like to see how I am progressing with my blog photography.

Click the links below to read the previous posts in the series

For today's post I'll be looking back at my once favourite Illamasqua Precision Gel Liner and seeing if I still feel the same way. You can read the original review below - please try and excuse the bad eyebrows :o

This gel liner was once my life, I wore it day after day and actually made quite a dint in the product. Up until last week I hadn't used this liner in months and months - the formula had dried out and it became increasingly difficult to apply the product smoothly, it wasn't until I hunted down the pot for photographing that I actually thought to loosen up the product with some eye drops.

After having this brain wave I've completely fallen back in love with the eyeliner - and as I've been applying it slightly damp I've been layering eyeshadows over it to create a coloured line - my favouite shadow to do this with is Alchemy from the Urban Decay Vice 3 Palette.

As I said I still love this eyeliner however there is one affordable alternative I prefer - Inglot #77.

Have you ever tried this product?

Blemishes Be Gone - The Skin Care Products That Cleared Up My Skin

Not too long ago my skin had the most unstable breakout in the history of my life, I'm not too sure why, my diet had not changed and my makeup and skin care routine was pretty much same old - but in spite of that it was rebelling.

Now I'm the sort of gal who doesn't believing in spending big bucks on skin care without trying it out first, so I headed down to my nearest Boots in search of budget skin care for my predicament - and that's where I spotted a new skin care line by Boots themselves containing three major blemish fighters - Tea Tree, Witch Hazel and Charcoal.

I picked up a couple of products including the Tea Tree, Witch Hazel and Charcoal Deep Cleansing Face Scrub, the Daily Detox Facial Wash, Cleansing & Toning Lotion and lastly the Night Gel.

I started using these twice daily and within a couple of days my skin was clear again, and I also noticed some left over redness had significantly reduced. I carried on using these products twice daily for just under two weeks, but my skin started to become quite dry, so with some hesitation I started using these products every other day - and so far they've kept any breakouts away. I also started to wash my makeup brushes in the Daily Detox Facial Wash - you can read the post regarding that here

I still have the occasional pimple appear but after giving my face a good exfoliate with the Deep Cleansing Face Scrub and applying the Night Gel it's gone when I wake up the next day.

If your someone like me that suffers from the odd breakout I highly recommend you add these products into your skin care regime. There budget buys but have all the ingredients that fight and treat blemishes and also help keep them away.

What are your thoughts on these products?

How I Style a Bold Lip Colour

Sorry about the deck chair - I have't found an office chair I like yet.

We all have our beauty nemesis - a technique or product that intimidates us or fills us with fear - this could be red lipstick, applying false eyelashes, contouring or wearing a bold lip colour. I've picked up a few tips here and there so I am ready to tackle a bold lip when, year after year the trend comes back around. I thought today I would share with you my bold lip 'Do's' and 'Dont's'.

DO // prime your lips before applying. Give them a quick exfoliate so there silky smooth, and apply plently of lip balm to get them hydrated. Doing this nessaray step will prevent your lip colour from applying patchy and will stop the formula from clinging to any dry patches.

DONT // skip lip liner! When applying a bold lip colour whether it be deep and dark or bright and in-your-face any mistakes you make will be more noticeable, using a lip pencil or taking some of the lipstick on a brush to line your lips will give you a clean sharp edge, rather than applying it straight from the bullet. You can also use concealer to clean away any mistakes you've made.

DO // make your base as flawless as humanly possible - I'm talking full coverage and pristine, no dark circles or blemishes peaking through. I find this just makes you look more 'put together' and people wont notice the breakout your suffering through, just the gorgeous lip colour you're rocking.

DONT // Don't go overboard on blush, contour and highlight. You don't want your cheeks fighting for peoples attention. Apply subtle colours which give you the 'your skin but better' effect.

DONT // go HAM on the eyes. chose neutral colours and focus on giving definition to your peepers. I typically opt for matte as I find these look more natural, I apply a soft brown on the lid, a medium brown in the crease to give the illusion of a shadow, and bring this down to the lower lash line, then apply a deep brown in the outer V. I then finish it off with a flick of eye liner and lots of lengthening mascara.

What's your favourite bold lip colour?

L'Oreal Studio Secrets Professional Smoothing Resurfacing Primer

Could this primer have a longer name?! It's such a mouthful!

As a rule I shy away from silicone and 'whipped' formula primers, as I find them greasy and not complimentary to my combination skin - but I got this primer free in a 3-for-2 deal when I purchased my beloved L'Oreal True Match Foundation so I gave a go.

I have zero experience with this style primer, so on the first couple of applications I was applying it everywhere, and my skin felt horrible - the amount of blotting I needed was no laughing matter. I soon cottoned on that less is more, so I applied a small amount just around my nose and forehead. This method worked slightly better, however my foundation had soon 'broken up' in those areas and even blotting couldn't save me. I also noticed that my foundation looked darker which I soon realised meant it had oxidised, something that rarely happens to me.

I found with this primer it did give my skin the 'blurred' effect and the texture around my nose looked smoother, however that is where the benefits ended. My skin felt greasy to touch, no matter how little product I applied I was left with a slippy residue. My foundation 'broke apart' and oxidised, and my skin looked oily in the areas where I had applied the product.

When I saw the effect this primer had on my foundation I could hear my pores screaming for help - I wanted nothing more than to rush home and exfoliate my face. Needless to say me and this primer really did not get along - I'm now more than ever firmly on team gel based primers.

Have you tried this primer - what were your thoughts?

The Ever Changing Makeup Bag | Febuary

You can read my previous 'Ever Changing Makeup Bag' Posts below

Last Month's Progress //

Eyes //  I used my Urban Decay Naked 3 palette every day that I wore makeup and I really fell back in love with the shades. I typically used 'Strange' as a brow and inner corner highlight, 'Limit' as a transition shade, applied 'Nooner' in my crease and finished it off with 'Burnout' all over the lid and this left me with soft and gentle every day makeup. For work I just worked 'Limit' from lid to crease as a quick wash of colour and 'Strange' on my brow bone. Its such a versatile palette perfect for every occasion - I'll definitely be reaching for this more often.

Lips // I surprisingly got the least use out of Plushest Punch, which is one of the Clinique Chubby Sticks, I found it was just a bit too bright for everyday wear, and for an evening look it drew too much attention away from my eyes, which is not what I wanted.

Face // I used Bella Bamba blush from Benefit every time I nipped out in the day as sometimes it could be too much, I found the shimmer in the product really battled with any other shimmer I had going on.

This Month's Products //
The products that I'll be adding to my makeup this month are...

Eyes // I want to get more use out of this gorgeous Benefit Cream Eyeshadow in the shade 'No Pressure'. It's a gorgeous soft bronze colour which is my thang so hopefully I get more use out it.

Lips // There was a time when the 'Sudueberry' Velevetine by Lime Crime was never off my lips, and I want to get back to that time again.

Face // I bought this Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick a while ago and I think in my mind I've categorized this as 'for special occasions only' makeup - but I really need to start wearing it more, especially since the colour match for my skin tone is perfect.

I'll post my progress next month and let you know what the new products will be.

January Favourites

I cant believe were in February already were is this year going? Here are the products I've been loving in January and cannot stop using.

MAC LIGHTSCAPADE MINERALISE SKIN FINISH //
This is a fairly new product to me, but already I love it. Out of all the highlighters I own I do not have one that suits me as perfectly as Lightscapade does. It really complements my cool, pale complexion, and doesn't add any colour to my cheeks, it simply highlights them - which is what we all want from a highlighter.

TOO FACED THE RETURN OF SEXY 'ICON' & 'MAN EATER' //
This palette has been on my eyes every time I've been out this past month. I've been switching between Icon and Man Eater, and mixing with my Optrex eye drops to make the shades much more intense and pigmented. Man Eater is a gorgeous Taupe colour which adds its own drama to a makeup look, whereas Icon is a more subtle colour which you can pair with neutral shades to make it a more neautral look, or pair it with pinks and purples to really draw out the pink tones in the shade.

MAKEUP GEEK EYESHADOW 'UNEXPECTED' //
This has been my transition shade of choice this month. I've been loving more muted pink and purple eye looks this month, and whatever I decide on doing with my eyes, Unexpected is always in my crease before I know it. It's a beautiful shade which can look neutral with golds and brown shades, or can look more purple toned when pair with a purple eyeshadow.

NYX EYESHADOW BASE 'SKIN' //
I have owned this for such a long time, but I recently rediscovered it and I've fallen in love with it all over again. The colour can be slightly off putting, it's an orange based warm beige, however it blends into my eye area seamlessly and it holds my eye shadows in place all day. This is a really good alternative to the MAC Paint Pots and a fraction of the price.

NYX SOFT MATTE LIP CREAM 'ISTANBUL' //
This again is another product I have owned forever, I must wear this every week at least once. I love matte liquid lipsticks, and this is my favourite one by far. The formula is so thick and creamy that your lips feel moisturised whilst still being matte. It doesn't set instantly so you get time to competely coat your lips without it setting half way and looking patchy. Every time I use this I always think it will be my last application just because I wear it so much and it surely must be near the end. I wish I could get hold of more of these but sadly they are always out of stock on the NYX website when I check...boo hoo

ELF MINERAL EYESHADOW 'CELEBRITY' //
Two of my favourite things in life are gold eyeshadows and pigment eyeshadows. 'Celebrity' is what happened when my two favourite products fell in love and had a baby. It's a beautiful soft shimmery gold which looks gorgeous as a highlight on the brow bone or inner corner of your eye. I mostly make a mix with my trusty Optrex and use all over the lid for a gorgeous high impact shimmery eye look.

Left - Right | NYX E/S Base 'Skin' | NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream 'Istanbul'
Too Faced 'Icon' | Too Faced 'Man Eater' | ELF Mineral E/S 'Celebrity'
Makeup Geek E/S 'Unexpected' | MAC MSF 'Lightscapade'
